Plato's Closet is this trendy consignment store where you take your "gently used brand name clothing" in hopes of exchanging them for money.
I'm in the process of moving (across the hall to my sister's room) so figured now would be the best time to clean out my closet.
After filling 2 large garbage bags full of quality clothes and shoes that I don't wear anymore, I figured it might be worth a try to attempt to make some money off of them at PC.
I always dread going to Plato's Closet though, it's always so brutal. Ashley eloquently described the experience as
"You bring bags of your best (used) clothes and wait as they go through them and turn their nose up at everything they see.
After they have finished rejecting your wardrobe, they give you about $8 for the few items they deemed worthy enough for the store."
Every time you try and sell anything there, you walk out with no money and no self-esteem.
But, Ashley recently had some luck on her last visit so I figured it might be worth a try.
I felt like I had some pretty "worthy" stuff to sell so feeling optimistic I happily handed over my things and awaited my fate.
They only accepted 3 items.
What?! I was so offended!
Why aren't my clothes ever good enough for them?!
Upon demanding an explanation, they snobbishly responded that my clothes are "too high-end" and that "people around here wouldn't know what they were."
So basically, they're happy to take my $15 Forever 21 dress, but not any of my fabulous Dior?!
Maybe I should be complimented by the fact that my clothes are "too good" for them, but I'm not.
Once again, I left Plato's closet with no money and no self-esteem.
Oh, PC, you've done it again.

haha.
You had two garbage bags full of too "high-end" clothing? I believe you are too spoiled!
I know a very cute girl who would love some of your too "high end" clothing!! ;o)
Donating to charity, or my closet, is always an honorable option too. ;)
They wouldn't benefit from taking them and neither would you. By this I mean they wouldn't profit from buying them and you wouldn't get nearly as much as they are worth.
The consumer wants fast fashion, so that is what they are going to buy. What it all comes down to is your clothing won't sell very well. PERIOD.
This just shows they are doing a great job. They know what there customers want. You can't take it personally. I mean after all they did say your clothes were too nice.
Not sure where you live but there are so many other places that buy gently used clothing, ones that specialize in buying designer clothing.
The person who posted above me is a weiner (and/or a rep for Platos Closet who is trying to do some positive media PR. Not gonna work here, friend.)
Nothing like trying to get some extra use out of quality clothes by selling them, only to find out you have to just get rid of them, and also be rejected or insulted in the process.
Your clothes are way nice. I would like them all please.
While Platos Closet might be doing what is best for business, I can't help but wonder how different their market would be if they bought the higher end clothes and sold them and what not. Their prices are great, and just because people are on a budget, that doesn't mean they shouldn't look and feel good. I would buy more at Platos if the majority of clothes were higher end, but what do I know.
thats really odd the platos closet i go to, all they have is high end clothes. that they sell hella cheap too. the staff there is so friendly and nice. so it just might be that all platos closets are not the same. sorry that they didnt want your clothes, it was just that it wouldnt sell as well as the most brands people are aware of, anyway you only get 30% of the 70% they market by. so you wouldnt be making much anyway.
